A layered approach
A year ahead astrology reading looks at twelve months of your life through several forecasting methods at once. Basic works with three of these methods, Premium with all five.
Cast for the moment the Sun returns to its exact place in your birth chart, on or close to your birthday. It shows where the year's rising point, the Ascendant, falls among your houses and which of them the year leans on. It also shows which of the Moon's phases your year opens in. A retrograde Mercury, Venus or Mars in it gets a note of its own, especially if the same planet was retrograde when you were born.
Each point of your birth chart moves forward by as many degrees as you are years old. When a moved point comes within a degree of a planet in another house, or of the line where that house begins, the two houses are read together. The 1st and the 10th then become you and your career, the 4th and the 9th home and places far from it.
The progressed Moon moves through the signs at about one sign every two and a half years. Your forecast places it at the start and at the end of your year, by sign and by the house of your chart it crosses. If it changes sign inside your year, that is marked, since it is often when what you need from life shifts.
Each solar and lunar eclipse of your year is placed in your chart, with any of your planets it lands near. How close it falls to the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, sets how strongly it counts. About three and a half months later it gets a follow-up point, when its theme tends to come round again.
Once a month through your year, the transiting Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are checked against your birth chart, with the aspect each one makes to your planets and the house it is passing through. When a slow planet turns retrograde, its backward motion can carry it back past the same point of your chart more than once, and you see the months when each loop turns.
