Cookies
WowAstro uses only the cookies it strictly needs to work. No advertising trackers, no third-party analytics by default. If we ever add analytics, we'll ask for your consent first and update this page. This policy complies with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR).
1. What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device. It allows the site to remember things between visits — like the fact you're signed in, or that you accepted the cookie banner.
2. The cookies we set
Authentication: NextAuth sets a session cookie when you sign in. This is essential — without it, you can't stay logged in. Expires when you sign out or after 30 days.
Consent preference: when you click 'Got it' or 'No thanks' on the cookie banner, we remember your choice in local storage (technically not a cookie, but covered by the same rules). This means we don't show you the banner again.
That's it. No analytics cookies, no advertising cookies, no third-party trackers.
3. Cookies set by sub-processors
Cloudflare (our CDN and DDoS protection layer) sets technical cookies such as `cf_clearance` and `__cf_bm` to verify that requests come from real browsers and not abusive bots. These are strictly necessary for the site to function safely and are governed by Cloudflare's own privacy and cookie policies (https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/).
When you pay, Dodo Payments Inc. (our Merchant of Record) may set its own session cookies during the checkout flow. These are essential to complete the payment and are governed by Dodo's own privacy policy (https://dodopayments.com/legal/privacy-policy) and cookie policy.
When we add analytics in the future (likely PostHog Cloud EU or equivalent privacy-friendly tool), we will ask for your consent first via the cookie banner — and you'll always be able to use the site fully without consenting.
4. Controlling cookies
You can clear cookies and local storage from your browser's settings. Doing so signs you out of WowAstro and reshows the cookie banner. Beyond that, there's nothing else for you to manage — we don't run cookies you'd need to opt out of individually.
