How sign compatibility actually works

Sun-sign compatibility is the version everyone starts with, and it earns its place: your Sun is the steady core of a chart, the thing you keep coming back to under stress, so two Suns rubbing along tells you something real about a couple’s default setting. It is just a small something. The Sun is roughly a tenth of a whole chart. The rest is carried by the Moon (how each of you needs to be looked after), Venus (what you find lovable and how you show it), Mars (desire and how you fight), and the angles those planets make between the two charts. That fuller comparison is called synastry, and it is where the surprises live: plenty of “textbook mismatches” turn out warm and steady once you see two Moons in easy conversation, and plenty of “perfect” element matches go flat because nothing in either chart ever pushes back. So read a sign pairing as a first impression. It is a good place to open a conversation about two people and a poor place to close one.

Compatibility by element and modality

The quickest way to make sense of the grid is to group the twelve signs the way astrologers do. By element: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) runs on impulse and warmth; earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) on patience and the practical; air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) on ideas and talk; water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) on feeling and instinct. Same-element pairs usually flow with the least translation, because you both value the same things without having to explain them. That ease is not the same as a good relationship, though.
